The Dog is the sign Chinese culture uses for loyalty, and loyalty here includes the uncomfortable kind: the friend who tells you the plan is bad and then helps anyway. Eleventh in the cycle, guarding the door at dusk.
The Dog character
Dogs hold 19:00 to 21:00, the hours when the household locks up and the dog takes the night watch. The sign is about duty and about a strong sense of who is inside the circle. You are fair-minded to the point of arguing against your own interest, and you keep commitments past the point where they stopped being convenient. Dogs also worry. The night watch is a job, and you take it home.
What the Dog does well
- Loyalty that is not conditional on being useful to you.
- A working sense of justice. You notice unfairness quickly and you act on it.
- You are steady in a crisis and useful afterwards, which is rarer.
- Honest counsel. People come to Dogs when they want the answer rather than comfort.
Where the Dog goes wrong
- Anxiety dressed as vigilance. Not every situation needs the night watch.
- You can be judgemental about people who fall short of a standard they never agreed to.
- Stubborn defence of a person who is actually wrong, because defending them is what you do.
The five Dog elements
Every sign appears in five versions, one per element, on a sixty-year loop. The element changes the temperament more than the animal does.
| Element | Years | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Dog | 1934, 1994, 2054 | The most idealistic Dog. Wood makes the loyalty principled rather than personal. |
| Fire Dog | 1946, 2006 | Warm, loud and protective. Fire Dogs are the ones who organise the group and then worry about it. |
| Earth Dog | 1958, 2018 | The most dependable Dog, and the least dramatic. You are the one people call at 2 a.m. |
| Metal Dog | 1970, 2030 | Principled and severe. Metal makes this sign a strict judge, including of itself. |
| Water Dog | 1982, 2042 | The most intuitive Dog. Water reads people well and worries about them more accurately, which is a mixed gift. |
Dog compatibility
The traditional relations put the Dog closest to Rabbit (the six-harmony pair) and to Tiger and Horse in the trine. The Dragon sits directly opposite, and the Rooster is the harm relation. None of this decides a relationship. It describes where two people have to work harder, which is more useful than a score.
| Pairing with | Relation | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Rat | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Ox | Punishment · 相刑 | a pattern that undermines itself slowly |
| Tiger | Trine · 三合 | a natural ally; low friction, similar pace |
| Rabbit | Secret friends · 六合 | the six-harmony pair; easy accord and shared instincts |
| Dragon | Clash · 相冲 | directly opposite; strong pull, opposite rhythms |
| Snake | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Horse | Trine · 三合 | a natural ally; low friction, similar pace |
| Goat | Punishment · 相刑 | a pattern that undermines itself slowly |
| Monkey | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Rooster | Harm · 相害 | each reads the other wrong; quiet, lasting friction |
| Dog | Same animal · 本命年 | mirrored strengths, and mirrored blind spots |
| Pig | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |

Dog years
A birth date in January or the first days of February usually belongs to the previous animal, because the Chinese year starts at Lichun rather than on 1 January. Use the calculator when the date is near the boundary.
| Year | Element | Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 1934 | Wood Yang | 甲戌 |
| 1946 | Fire Yang | 丙戌 |
| 1958 | Earth Yang | 戊戌 |
| 1970 | Metal Yang | 庚戌 |
| 1982 | Water Yang | 壬戌 |
| 1994 | Wood Yang | 甲戌 |
| 2006 | Fire Yang | 丙戌 |
| 2018 | Earth Yang | 戊戌 |
| 2030 | Metal Yang | 庚戌 |
| 2042 | Water Yang | 壬戌 |
Ben Ming Nian for the Dog
Your Ben Ming Nian (本命年, “native year”) is any year that repeats your animal. For the Dog the next one is 2030, and it runs from Lichun in February 2030 to Lichun in February 2031. The most recent was 2018. Tradition treats the year as one for caution rather than celebrity: red clothing, and in folk practice red string, worn through the year. Nothing about it is required, and nothing about it is dangerous.
The Dog in Chinese culture
The Dog holds 戌, 19:00 to 21:00, the hour the gates were barred and the dog took the watch. It is the eleventh animal, one place before the Pig. Its reputation in Chinese culture is complicated: loyalty and protection in proverbs, but also contempt in phrases like 狗急跳墙 (“a cornered dog jumps the wall”). Dog imagery still guards doorways in folk practice, and the sign sits opposite the Dragon, its classic clash.
Questions
What years are the Year of the Dog?
Dog years are 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030, and next 2042. The zodiac year starts at Lichun in early February, so January birthdays usually belong to the Rooster.
Why is the Dog eleventh?
In the Great Race story the Dog arrives late, usually because it stopped to play or to swim, which folk tradition uses to explain the sign’s mix of duty and distractibility. The order matters less than the pairing: the Dog faces the Dragon across the cycle.
Who is the Dog most compatible with?
The Rabbit is the six-harmony partner, and the Tiger and Horse are trine allies, a group associated with loyalty and movement. The Dragon is the direct clash and the Rooster the harm relation.
