The Rat opens the cycle, and Chinese tradition gives it the least glamorous reason for being first: it woke up early, it noticed things, and it got there before anyone bigger. If you are a Rat, that is the whole brief.
The Rat character
Rats read the room before they enter it. The animal’s reputation in Chinese folk stories is not about strength but about timing and nerve: the Rat wins the race by riding the Ox and stepping off at the finish line, which is either clever or cheeky depending on who is telling it. In practice that shows up as fast pattern recognition. You notice the shift in a group’s mood, the detail everyone skimmed, the exit that nobody mapped. You almost never announce it.
What the Rat does well
- You gather information faster than most people around you and you keep it, so you are usually the one who knows what actually happened.
- Money and resources get handled carefully. Not stinginess: you can see the cost of a thing that other people wave through.
- When a plan collapses you improvise without much drama. Adaptation is the Rat’s native mode.
- You read people accurately and rarely say the accurate thing out loud, which makes you a good ally to have in a negotiation.
Where the Rat goes wrong
- Caution can turn into pre-emptive retreat. You leave before the door is actually closed, and then call it a smart call.
- Because you spot problems early, you sometimes kill an idea that only needed two more weeks. Not every risk needs announcing.
- You can be quietly possessive about information. It is a form of control, and people notice it even when you think you are being subtle.
The five Rat elements
Every sign appears in five versions, one per element, on a sixty-year loop. The element changes the temperament more than the animal does.
| Element | Years | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Rat | 1924, 1984, 2044 | The most forward-looking Rat. Wood gives the caution somewhere to go, so you build instead of just guarding. |
| Fire Rat | 1936, 1996, 2056 | Fast, social, and more openly ambitious than other Rats. Fire burns off some of the natural reserve. |
| Earth Rat | 1948, 2008 | The steadiest Rat. You trade a little speed for a base that does not move, which suits long projects. |
| Metal Rat | 1960, 2020 | Sharpest of the five. Metal adds discipline and a streak of ruthlessness in decisions you would rather not revisit. |
| Water Rat | 1972, 2032 | The Rat in its own element. Intuitive, adaptable, and hard to read, in the way that deep water is hard to read. |
Rat compatibility
The traditional relations put the Rat closest to Ox (the six-harmony pair) and to Dragon and Monkey in the trine. The Horse sits directly opposite, and the Goat is the harm relation. None of this decides a relationship. It describes where two people have to work harder, which is more useful than a score.
| Pairing with | Relation | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Rat | Same animal · 本命年 | mirrored strengths, and mirrored blind spots |
| Ox | Secret friends · 六合 | the six-harmony pair; easy accord and shared instincts |
| Tiger | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Rabbit | Punishment · 相刑 | a pattern that undermines itself slowly |
| Dragon | Trine · 三合 | a natural ally; low friction, similar pace |
| Snake | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Horse | Clash · 相冲 | directly opposite; strong pull, opposite rhythms |
| Goat | Harm · 相害 | each reads the other wrong; quiet, lasting friction |
| Monkey | Trine · 三合 | a natural ally; low friction, similar pace |
| Rooster | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Dog | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Pig | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |

Rat years
A birth date in January or the first days of February usually belongs to the previous animal, because the Chinese year starts at Lichun rather than on 1 January. Use the calculator when the date is near the boundary.
| Year | Element | Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 1936 | Fire Yang | 丙子 |
| 1948 | Earth Yang | 戊子 |
| 1960 | Metal Yang | 庚子 |
| 1972 | Water Yang | 壬子 |
| 1984 | Wood Yang | 甲子 |
| 1996 | Fire Yang | 丙子 |
| 2008 | Earth Yang | 戊子 |
| 2020 | Metal Yang | 庚子 |
| 2032 | Water Yang | 壬子 |
Ben Ming Nian for the Rat
Your Ben Ming Nian (本命年, “native year”) is any year that repeats your animal. For the Rat the next one is 2032, and it runs from Lichun in February 2032 to Lichun in February 2033. The most recent was 2020. Tradition treats the year as one for caution rather than celebrity: red clothing, and in folk practice red string, worn through the year. Nothing about it is required, and nothing about it is dangerous.
The Rat in Chinese culture
The Rat holds the first earthly branch, 子, and the double hour from 23:00, when rats are most active. It is the first animal in the Great Race story because it asked the Ox for a lift and jumped off at the bank, which folk tradition tells as a lesson in wit over bulk rather than a lesson in fair play. In daily Chinese, 老鼠 (“old rat”) is the everyday word, and the animal carries an odd double reputation: a pest in the house and a sign of surplus in the granary.
Questions
What years are the Year of the Rat?
Rat years run 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, and next 2032. The Chinese year starts at Lichun in early February, so a January birthday usually belongs to the previous animal. Check the exact instant with the calculator.
Is the Rat a bad sign in Chinese culture?
Less than in English. Chinese tradition treats the Rat as clever and resourceful, with an eye for stored wealth; the negative read is pettiness and hoarding. The animal’s reputation in Chinese idiom is closer to “street-smart” than to “vermin”.
Who is the Rat most compatible with?
The Ox is the Rat’s six-harmony partner, and the Dragon and Monkey are its trine allies. The Horse sits directly opposite and is traditionally the hardest pairing, with the Goat as the harm relation.
