The Dragon is the only animal in the cycle that nobody has ever seen, and Chinese culture gave it the best slot anyway. Fifth place, a seat next to emperors, and a reputation for weather. Being born in a Dragon year carries more social weight than any other sign, which is a strange thing to grow up inside.
The Dragon character
Dragons get 07:00 to 09:00, the hour when mist was said to gather before the dragon brought rain, and the sign runs on that image: visible, consequential, and slightly theatrical. You are used to being noticed and you have probably built some skill at it. The traditional read is generous, success, confidence, an appetite for scale. The honest read is that Dragons are often better at starting large things than at the unglamorous middle, and the sign attracts people who confuse momentum with progress.
What the Dragon does well
- Ambition that is not embarrassed by itself. You will name the big goal out loud, which most people will not do.
- Natural authority. Rooms reorganise around you without you asking.
- You recover from failure fast, partly because you never really believed it was your ceiling.
- Vision that other people can borrow. Dragons make an idea feel possible, and that is a real contribution.
Where the Dragon goes wrong
- You can be dismissive of detail and then surprised when the detail matters.
- Praise is a drug for this sign. Dragons tolerate flattery longer than they should.
- Impatience with people who move slower, which is most people, most of the time.
The five Dragon elements
Every sign appears in five versions, one per element, on a sixty-year loop. The element changes the temperament more than the animal does.
| Element | Years | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Dragon | 1964, 2024 | The builder. This Dragon finishes things, because Wood cares about growth rather than applause. |
| Fire Dragon | 1976, 2036 | The most spectacular and least restrained Dragon. Enormous energy, short fuse, and a talent for drama. |
| Earth Dragon | 1928, 1988, 2048 | A Dragon with foundations, which is unusual and effective. You still aim high but you keep the receipts. |
| Metal Dragon | 1940, 2000, 2060 | Sharp, principled, and a little cold. Metal gives this sign discipline and an unforgiving sense of standards. |
| Water Dragon | 1952, 2012 | The most intuitive Dragon. Water makes you adaptable and politically careful, which the sign normally is not. |
Dragon compatibility
The traditional relations put the Dragon closest to Rooster (the six-harmony pair) and to Rat and Monkey in the trine. The Dog sits directly opposite, and the Rabbit is the harm relation. None of this decides a relationship. It describes where two people have to work harder, which is more useful than a score.
| Pairing with | Relation | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Rat | Trine · 三合 | a natural ally; low friction, similar pace |
| Ox | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Tiger | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Rabbit | Harm · 相害 | each reads the other wrong; quiet, lasting friction |
| Dragon | Same animal · 年年相刑 | mirrored strengths, and mirrored blind spots |
| Snake | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Horse | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Goat | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Monkey | Trine · 三合 | a natural ally; low friction, similar pace |
| Rooster | Secret friends · 六合 | the six-harmony pair; easy accord and shared instincts |
| Dog | Clash · 相冲 | directly opposite; strong pull, opposite rhythms |
| Pig | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |

Dragon years
A birth date in January or the first days of February usually belongs to the previous animal, because the Chinese year starts at Lichun rather than on 1 January. Use the calculator when the date is near the boundary.
| Year | Element | Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 1940 | Metal Yang | 庚辰 |
| 1952 | Water Yang | 壬辰 |
| 1964 | Wood Yang | 甲辰 |
| 1976 | Fire Yang | 丙辰 |
| 1988 | Earth Yang | 戊辰 |
| 2000 | Metal Yang | 庚辰 |
| 2012 | Water Yang | 壬辰 |
| 2024 | Wood Yang | 甲辰 |
| 2036 | Fire Yang | 丙辰 |
Ben Ming Nian for the Dragon
Your Ben Ming Nian (本命年, “native year”) is any year that repeats your animal. For the Dragon the next one is 2036, and it runs from Lichun in February 2036 to Lichun in February 2037. The most recent was 2024. Tradition treats the year as one for caution rather than celebrity: red clothing, and in folk practice red string, worn through the year. Nothing about it is required, and nothing about it is dangerous.
The Dragon in Chinese culture
The Dragon holds 辰, 07:00 to 09:00, the hour of gathering mist. It is the fifth animal and the only mythical one, which is why the cycle is sometimes called the eleven animals and the dragon. Imperial iconography took the sign over completely: five-clawed dragons for the emperor, four for princes, and restrictions on who could wear them. Folk culture kept a parallel dragon, the rain-bringer of the harvest, and the two have never fully separated.
Questions
What years are the Year of the Dragon?
Dragon years are 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024, and next 2036. The zodiac year starts at Lichun in early February, so late-January births usually belong to the Rabbit.
Why are Dragon years so popular for babies?
The sign carries imperial and prosperity associations, so birth rates in parts of East Asia have visibly risen in Dragon years, including 2012 and 2024. Demographers track it as a cultural preference rather than anything astrological.
Who is the Dragon most compatible with?
The Rooster is the six-harmony partner, and the Rat and Monkey are trine allies, a combination traditionally praised for competence. The Dog is the direct clash and the Rabbit the harm relation.
