Western culture gave the snake a bad press that Chinese tradition never quite agreed with. Here it is the sign of the strategist: quiet, deliberate, and dangerous mostly to people who underestimate it.
The Snake character
Snakes hold 09:00 to 11:00, when the animal leaves its burrow to sun itself. The sign is associated with thought rather than action, and specifically with thought that is not shared. You work things out privately and present conclusions, which makes you look sudden to people who did not see the working. Chinese folk usage calls the snake 小龙, the little dragon, and the two signs share a reputation for depth and for a certain coldness.
What the Snake does well
- You are genuinely strategic. Long games, patient positioning, and a good memory for who did what.
- Grace under pressure. Snakes do not visibly panic, and this alone makes you useful in a crisis.
- Insight into motive. You see what people want before they say it.
- You keep confidences, and you keep them for years.
Where the Snake goes wrong
- Secrecy becomes habit even when transparency would cost nothing. People fill the silence with worse guesses than the truth.
- You can carry a grudge with excellent bookkeeping.
- Contempt for people who think slower, expressed as polite distance.
The five Snake elements
Every sign appears in five versions, one per element, on a sixty-year loop. The element changes the temperament more than the animal does.
| Element | Years | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Snake | 1965, 2025 | The most sociable Snake. Wood makes you interested in other people’s plans rather than only in your own. |
| Fire Snake | 1977, 2037 | Charismatic and quick. Fire makes this Snake visible, which removes part of the sign’s natural advantage. |
| Earth Snake | 1929, 1989, 2049 | Patient and immovable. Earth Snakes build slowly and hold what they build. |
| Metal Snake | 1941, 2001 | The sharpest version. Metal adds precision and a taste for rules, and removes some of the sign’s flexibility. |
| Water Snake | 1953, 2013 | The Snake at its purest. Intuitive, private, and extremely hard to read, which is exactly how the sign prefers it. |
Snake compatibility
The traditional relations put the Snake closest to Monkey (the six-harmony pair) and to Ox and Rooster in the trine. The Pig sits directly opposite, and the Tiger is the harm relation. None of this decides a relationship. It describes where two people have to work harder, which is more useful than a score.
| Pairing with | Relation | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Rat | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Ox | Trine · 三合 | a natural ally; low friction, similar pace |
| Tiger | Harm · 相害 | each reads the other wrong; quiet, lasting friction |
| Rabbit | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Dragon | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Snake | Same animal · 本命年 | mirrored strengths, and mirrored blind spots |
| Horse | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Goat | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Monkey | Secret friends · 六合 | the six-harmony pair; easy accord and shared instincts |
| Rooster | Trine · 三合 | a natural ally; low friction, similar pace |
| Dog | — | no formal relationship; behaviour matters more than the chart |
| Pig | Clash · 相冲 | directly opposite; strong pull, opposite rhythms |

Snake years
A birth date in January or the first days of February usually belongs to the previous animal, because the Chinese year starts at Lichun rather than on 1 January. Use the calculator when the date is near the boundary.
| Year | Element | Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 1941 | Metal Yin | 辛巳 |
| 1953 | Water Yin | 癸巳 |
| 1965 | Wood Yin | 乙巳 |
| 1977 | Fire Yin | 丁巳 |
| 1989 | Earth Yin | 己巳 |
| 2001 | Metal Yin | 辛巳 |
| 2013 | Water Yin | 癸巳 |
| 2025 | Wood Yin | 乙巳 |
| 2037 | Fire Yin | 丁巳 |
Ben Ming Nian for the Snake
Your Ben Ming Nian (本命年, “native year”) is any year that repeats your animal. For the Snake the next one is 2037, and it runs from Lichun in February 2037 to Lichun in February 2038. The most recent was 2025. Tradition treats the year as one for caution rather than celebrity: red clothing, and in folk practice red string, worn through the year. Nothing about it is required, and nothing about it is dangerous.
The Snake in Chinese culture
The Snake holds 巳, 09:00 to 11:00, when snakes were said to leave their burrows. It is the sixth animal, coiled in the middle of the cycle. The strongest cultural presence is the Legend of the White Snake, in which a snake spirit takes human form and marries a mortal, a story performed every year and one that gives the sign its romantic, slightly transgressive reputation. Folk language often calls the snake 小龙, acknowledging that it sits next to the dragon.
Questions
What years are the Year of the Snake?
Snake years are 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025, and next 2037. The zodiac year opens at Lichun in early February, so births in January usually belong to the previous animal, the Dragon in this case.
Is the Snake considered unlucky in China?
Not in the way Western folklore suggests. The sign is associated with wisdom, refinement and strategy, and the White Snake is a sympathetic heroine. The negative read is secretiveness and jealousy rather than evil.
Who is the Snake most compatible with?
The Monkey is the six-harmony partner, and the Rooster and Ox form the trine, a group known for being capable and slightly ruthless. The Pig is the direct clash and the Tiger the harm relation.
